REBUILDING LIVES
Supporting refugees to
rebuild lives of independence
The refugee story has always been an integral part of
our community’s shared history. We understand deeply
what it means to leave everything behind in search of
safety and peace. And equally, we know the value and
importance of Welcoming the Stranger.
And the refugee story is also at the heart of World
Jewish Relief’s history. Established in 1933 to support Jews
昀氀eeing persecution, we have been supporting displaced
communities in crisis to rebuild their lives ever since.
This includes Ethiopian Jews in the 1950s, Bosnians

our award-winning Specialist Training and Employment
Programme (STEP) to help refugees arriving in the UK
昀椀nd work and rebuild their lives.
Over the last two years, we have worked in partnership
with the UK Government to expand this work. Since
August 2023, we have supported 14,000 refugees in the
UK – including 13,000 Ukrainians – to learn English and
昀椀nd employment through online and in-person support.
This includes targeted support to asylum-seekers, those
with no previous English skills, and women refugees. We
are committed to prioritising women and girls across
our global programmes, who are often worst a昀昀ected in
times of crisis. Over the next year, we will support 1,500
refugees from all backgrounds in the UK.
