REBUILDING LIVES
Myanmar Earthquake:
response timeline
March 28, 06:34: News begins trickling in of a big
7.7-magnitude earthquake hitting central Myanmar with
tremors felt in Bangkok. Our team are monitoring the
situation.
March 28, 07:24: We are in contact with our trusted
partner in the country, Swanyee, who are part of our
Disaster Preparedness Initiative. Needs assessment
taking place.
March 28, 08:43: By now it’s clear this earthquake has
devastated communities in Myanmar, following reports
from our partners and other organisations, but news
is still slow to be released. Government have asked for
international support.
March 28, 14:00: Our Emergency Taskforce have
convened, and we have followed our strict criteria. This
crisis ful昀椀ls all criterion, and we launch our emergency
appeal by 15:00.
March 28, 16:31: We begin to receive generous donations
from supporters to provide life-saving humanitarian aid
including shelter, water, hygiene kits and cash. These
are needs identi昀椀ed by Swanyee and our team, and will
not be met otherwise. As of June 2025, we have reached
1,500 households with critical aid.
We also know that the majority of disasters never make it to the news. As members of the START Network –
made up of hundreds of local and international humanitarian NGOs across the world – we are updated on these
crises on a daily basis. We are working to respond to these under-the-radar crises through the START Fund,
which is in part funded by the UK government, alongside our Disaster Fund, to support affected communities in
countries such as Colombia, Haiti and more recently, Kenya.
